UPDATED 22/5/2023
Please be aware changes were made to these instructions on 22/5/2023 to reflect changes in our service and the police paperwork.
If you have been sent the Link to this page you should have by now received your NIE Number Paperwork (3 pdf documents).
If you have landed on this page and do not already have a booking/NIE Number please visit our Homepage to read more about our Service.
Below we give some General advice. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.
Your appointment will fail if you do not follow the instructions.
Problems you may notice with your forms
- If we were unable to identify your sex from your name we may have left the sex field blank. If this is blank please use a black pen to mark an X
H for MAN/HOMBRE
or
M FOR MUJER/WOMAN.
2.) Please open these documents on a PC/Laptop to print and do not send to print or open directly from your mobile phone as it may cut important information off the bottom of each page and in some cases make the form appear blank/Incomplete.
3.) We have used the details you provided us to complete your forms. Sometimes, if you used a mobile phone mistakes when entering your details into our form or autocorrect means we get sent misspellings of names ect then use that on your form. If this happens and you have ADOBE READER on your computer you can correct the form by simply typing into them. If other changes are needed please email us back.
If we have supplied an address please do not change this as it may affect your appointment. The address will be in the catchment area of the police station your going to. Changing it might take you outside that catchment area.
4.) Your forms can be completed in any EU recognized Language. Please note we do not use the Escalera, Piso or Puerta fields on the form 790. We also do not use the second surname (2 Apellido) on either the ex-15 or ex-18 as it causes confusion at the police station and mis-printing of your NIE Certificate. Please do not try to amend the above we do this for a good reason.
5.) Your booking form (form 1) may have our telephone number and our email address on it. This is normal as it is us making the booking on your behalf.
3 in 10 NIE Number applications are on average refused at the police station because people have not followed these instructions…. We rely on you reading and following the instructions for your appointment to be successful…
We have sent you 3 forms via email, (please check your spam or junk mail):
You need to print all the documents we sent you. You can print in Black and white or colour. Please only print single sided (ie 1 sheet of paper per document/page) Printing of both sides of the paper will not be accepted at your appointment.
1.) The first form (normally your surname followed by number 1) is your booking receipt (CITA) for the Police Station.
You need to print one copy of this and take it with you on the day of your appointment. This form shows your appointment time, Date and the address of the Police Station. Please be aware some Police stations are not listed on Google/MSN maps for legal/security reasons related to terrorism. Please ensure you plan your route in advance.
For the avoidance of doubt on form one Cita Previa
Día de la cita is Date of your appointment
Hora cita is the time of your appointment
Dirección is the address of the police station you need to attend
2.) The Second form (790), Normally saved as your Surname plus the number 2, is the form you need to pay the Government tax at the Bank. The amount of this tax is 9.84 if we have provided you with an ex15 form or 12.00 if you have an ex-18 form.
You need to print 1 copy of this 3 page form, take this to a national bank ideally bank BBVA and pay the tax.
PLEASE ENSURE THE BANK WORKER STAMPS AT LEAST ONE DOCUMENT. (This form is made up of 3 pages, 2 of which are identical. You need to print all 3) The Bank may or may not keep one page leaving you with two pages to take to the police station. The bank might use a Manual ink stamp or print direct onto the document using a printer. Both ways are perfectly fine. If your paying on a ATM cash machine you wont have a stamp on your forms but will have a recipt from the machine instead.
You need to go to the bank and pay the tax in advance of your appointment. If you arrive at your appointment with an unstamped form/no payment receipt from the ATM its an instant refusal. Do not leave this until the last minute unless you have a fast track/cancelation appointment. You can pay this days in advance you don’t need to do the day of your appointment.

3.) The third form is called EX-15 (your surname plus 3) . This is your main NIE Number application form. You need to print 1 copy of this three page document.
If you live in an Area which only offers joint residency/NIE at the same time you will have been sent a EX-18 instead of a EX-15.
Please note if we have sent you an ex-18 form and you live in either Madrid or Barcelona or Valencia or lanzarote these city’s require a higher burden of proof as to why you need a nie number. If you are unsure of the requirements please call the office on 0034 665556070 to discuss.
MORE NOTES
You may notice we have left some sections of your NIE Number forms blank. This is either because its inapplicable to your application, or due to regional differences in how the form should be completed. Please do not make any changes to the forms.
We recommend taking a BLACK PEN with you on the day of your appointment if further sections need to be completed.
TOP TIP: Get there on time, and if possible up to an hour before your appointment time. Check out parking near the police station the day before if driving there. The police will not be sympathetic if your late for appointment and will simply refuse to see you.
Please do not sign the Forms. The police officer will ask you to sign on the day of the appointment.
The location of your appointment and opting for an out of town location.
PLEASE READ: Ideally You should have your appointment in the nearest police station to where you live/work however, sometimes due to the long waiting times you might opt to have your appointment in the next town along or travel to another city completely.
If you are traveling to another area to obtain your NIE Number we would have provided a local registered address on your paperwork in there catchment area of that police station. This is ‘your address’ for the purpose of your application for the day. The provision of an address is only for the catchment area of each police station it wont be linked/printed on your NIE number certificate.
The police will refuse your NIE Number application if they are made aware you have traveled from another province. The Spanish police do not like doing the work of another area….
Telling the police about your journey down wont be helpful to your application…
Now its over to you….
It is your responsibility to prove why you need a NIE Number to the police. The levels of proof in each region vary greatly and can sometimes be down to the individual officer on the day of your appointment. Most area’s a Verbal reason such as ‘I want to open a bank account’ will be suitable but not all areas are this lienient.
Please note: We can only book your appointment and complete your forms. It is your responsibility to provide the proof required to obtain your NIE Number, find the police station, pay the NIE Number tax and turn up on time.
Your NIE Number is issued at the sole discretion of the Spanish Police/Government and not MYNIE.
The proof you need to take depends on your reason for application.
Below are a few examples, but we recommend taking every piece of possible proof with you.
We see people turned away for insufficient proof every week. Most area’s you just show your passport and the documents we have provided but some area’s require:
Original in date Passport plus photo copy of the inside two pages REQUIRED FOR ALL AREA’S *
Important> UK and non EU passport holders will need to provide a photo copy of EVERY PAGE of their passport, plus a separate photo copy showing the entry stamp provided at the airport showing you arrived within the last 90 days in the shengen area. We understand it may seem crazy photo copying the blank pages of your passport but this is what the police require.
2 Passport sized photos (may or may not be used) REQUIRED FOR ALL AREA’S
Work contract (or pre contract) or proof of funds to show you can support your self (5,500 euros for a single person or 7,500 euros for a couple), Spanish private health insurance and tenancy agreement over 6 months and Padron in the case of applying with an ex-18 form. Work contracts should be written in Spanish only.
Proof of pension
Birth certificates for children under 18, must be translated into Spanish REQUIRED FOR ALL AREA’S. For translation services we recommend www.stepes.com
The amount of proof you take is optional but the more you take the greater your chances of getting a NIE Number the same Day. Less proof is required for EU National than non EU Nationals.
Been refused a NIE Number by the Spanish Police? Click here.
There will normally be a translator onsite at Police stations who mostly deal with British speaking people, however we can not guarantee this. If you are not confidant you may want to take a translator with you on the day.
Most NIE Number certificates are issued the same day….
However… We can never guarantee this! It is the discretion of the police as and when they issue the certificate.
You maybe asked to come back the next afternoon or in some rare cases a few days latter to collect your NIE Number certificate. If your traveling to a station please keep this in mind.
CERT EU/EX-18/TIE CARD problems when applying for a white NIE with an EX-15
Most people will only require the white NIE A4 paper to start with unless you are in Barcelona, Madrid or Valencia, Lanzarote and Las Palmas. This NIE is sometimes referred to as a temporary or 3 month NIE Number but in-fact since 2017 it is a life long number.
Recently we have seen some police stations telling people they should be applying straight for a EX-18 GREEN NIE. To obtain this green nie also known as residency or Cert Eu you need to have either a job in place (which you can not get without a nie) or private health insurance plus proof of funds in a Spanish bank account of 7,000 euros and a Padron certificate dated in the last 3 months.
If the police do try to tell you to apply for a GREEN NIE, known as a CERT EU, or residency (TIE) instead of the white nie you need to insist it is a WHITE NON RESIDENT NIE YOU NEED.
If you are a NON EU PASSPORT HOLDER (including uk passport holders after Brexit) you will be asked to show a valid entry stamp in your passport to show you have arrived in the last 3 months. If your traveling by land you will need to get an entry stamp somewhere in the Schengen area proving you arrived in the last 90 days. If you don’t have this you will need to explain to the police why.
Translation if the officer doesn’t speak English
I require only a white Non Resident NIE Number Please
Solo necesito un número NIE blanco no residente Por favor

Requesting a new appointment
Your appointment is with the National Police of Spain. This is an IMPORTANT appointment and can not just be missed. The Spanish Police and government take these appointments very seriously and simply not turning up is seen as wasting police time and the police take this very seriously.
You must notify us as soon as possible if you’re not attending the appointment so we can notify the police and they can allocate your appointment to another person. Appointments are booked in your name and are non transferable.
The police officer is sat there waiting for you to arrive. Our staff have put in a lot of time to get you the appointment and prepare the paperwork and it has used an appointment someone else could have used.
Our instructions are comprehensive and have been sent to you in advance to prepare. You must follow these instructions or your appointment will fail.
This service is to book you one appointment. If you are not able to attend your appointment or have already missed it please use the below link to order a new appointment.
As it was being widely abused with people regularly not attending appointments there is now a £15 plus IVA charge for rebooking you a new appointment.
This reduced rate does not apply to Valencia or Barcelona. Customers in these areas need to start a new order from scratch. Please be aware we are unable to guarantee set dates for rebooking.
If you have missed your appointment or your appointment failed as you did not follow the instructions please click here to book another one at the reduced rate

Additional pointers
The majority of our customers are lovely… But a few just want someone to blame for life…We are always here to help but there’s just some things we can not help with. Below is a few recent examples…
Customer: ‘You have sent me to the police station and its boiling hot, im disgusted with this’
My NIE: As Spain has a tropical/hot climate it likely that the police station may be hot inside…We have no control over the air conditioning, or lack of, in the police station.
Customer: The police man/woman was rude to me’ How can I make a complaint?
My NIE: Many of the police at the foreigners office are excellent and helpful but, Some clearly did not get an A star at customer service school. Im afraid there is nothing we can do about this and complaining will achieve nothing more than wasting your time. Get your NIE, get back out the door, smile and move on with your new life in Spain!
Customer: The Police spoke to me in Spanish? Why didn’t you give me an English/German/French police man/woman?
My NIE: As the native Language in Spain please expect the Police to talk in Spanish. Many have excellent English language skills but not all. We are in their country and as such should respect their language.
Customer: Why didn’t you tell me there was no parking outside the police station…
My NIE: Our service is to book your appointment and provide your paperwork. We can not organise your life. Please ensure you check out how to get to the police station, where to park etc before your appointment. Do not expect a parking space out the front waiting for you….Please remember if your late for your appointment the police will not see you so ensure you do some research in advance or arrive extra early.
Customer: I don’t have a printer. How am I suppose to print the forms…
My NIE: As you have signed up to an internet service clearly the forms will come via the internet and need printing. If you do not have a home printer perhaps you could ask a friend, go to an Internet cafe, or ask at the reception of the hotel your staying in.. One way or the other you must print the forms they can not be shown digitally.
Customer: The forms you have sent me are in Spanish. I don’t speak Spanish so I want them in my language.
My NIE: The police will only accept original forms produced by the Spanish Government/Police which are in Spanish. We have fully completed these forms so you don’t need to do anything with them other than print and follow the instructions above. The instructions we sent you are available in 15 different languages by changing the dropdown box in the top right hand corner. The forms must remain in Spanish.
Customer: I have been stood outside my hotel waiting for you to collect me for an hour. When are you coming?…..
My NIE: This service is to book your appointment and provide your paperwork. We do not offer transport to the police station you must organise this your self.
Customer: My appointment failed as I did not read and follow the instructions
My NIE: By the time of your appointment our emails and website would have pointed out to you the importance of reading and following these instructions to the letter. Your appointment will fail if you do not read and follow the instructions.
I took my passport photos but they didn’t use them. Why?
We recommend everyone takes 2 passport photos with them. In some areas they don’t ask for them, however it’s always best to take them anyway in case. It’s better to be over prepared than under.
The police said I need an appointment to collect my NIE number. How do I get this?
In some areas you may need a second appointment to collect your NIE number. This is mostly in the Malaga region. If this is the case please drop the office an email after your appointment and they will make a collection appointment for you.
