How to get a NIE Number in Marbella

Marbella is situated in the foothills of the Sierra Blanca, on the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga. A model Mediterranean resort and huge favourite with holidaymakers from all over the globe.

Since the 1970s, Marbella has been renowned as a playground for the rich and famous. Yet underneath all the swagger, there is so much more to Marbella. It boasts a wonderfully cosmopolitan atmosphere and exudes charisma; attracting visitors for its many attractions: amazing beaches, warm weather, leisure facilities, including some of the best golf courses in Europe, restaurants, world-class nightlife and International luxury shopping brands.

Marbella is a charming, warm and welcoming town. So it’s no surprise that time and again, it tops the most visited city in Spain list (also tops our chart for the most NIE Numbers requested in 1 week). Who wouldn’t want a piece of the action in Marbella?

Marbella’s motto is “a way of life”, if you are looking for a holiday that offers great beaches, wonderful all-year round climate, unique leisure facilities, gastronomy and entertainment, then choose Marbella, its way of life will enchant you.

Things to See & Do in Marbella

The beaches and enclaves of east Marbella through to the western municipal of San Pedro de Alcantara, Marbella offers so many activities and facilities, visitors have no need to venture away from the area to enjoy a full and active holiday.

In the famous Plaza de Naranja ’Orange Square’, you can while away hours, sipping sangria, taking in the beautiful surroundings and people, visiting the charming boutiques and gift stores.

The labyrinth of tiny streets and alleys that surround Orange Square will reveal further tiny shops selling all forms of trinkets, fashion and souvenirs and there are some excellent restaurants and bars for a young and trendy crowd.

Cross the road from the Old Town and you find yourself in La Alameda Park, filled with exotic plants and trees, leading down to an open exhibition area; where you can enjoy a permanent exhibition of Dali sculptures and temporary art and media exhibitions during the year.

Down from the park is the Paseo Maritimo (Promenade); this is one of the favourite places for locals and visitors. The boulevard is filled with restaurants of all gastronomies, with terraces facing out to the beautiful Mediterranean.

Marbella’s beaches: The Marbella coastline stretches from Cabopino through to San Pedro de Alcantara. 26 kilometres of golden sandy beaches, shelving down to the calm Mediterranean Sea.

To the east, Cabopino port and beach are home to a couple of laid-back and economical Chiringuitos (Beach Restaurants), the beach right next to the port has sunbeds for hire and is a popular kite surfing spot. As you move west away from the port, the beach becomes a nudist spot. Head west to the popular area of Elviria and the famous Nikki Beach and then on to one of the most beautiful and natural stretches of beach, which joins Elviria and the urbanisation of El Rosario.

Funny Beach just outside of Marbella, is an amusement park on the beach, with go karts, parasailing, water scooters and a restaurant bar.

Marbella town’s beaches are well equipped, with water sports facilities, beach restaurants line the golden sands, cooking sardines on the spit, the waters are calm, ideal for family beach days. Head further west into Puerto Banus and you have a mix of family beach zones and hedonistic beach clubs, where you’ll likely bump into a few celebrities and paparazzi.

Finally, you reach San Pedro de Alcantara, at the western limits of Marbella. Here the wide, palm-fringed beaches are more laid-back, backed by a beautiful promenade and restaurants.

Shopping in Marbella: If you want to combine a beach holiday with a shopping trip, Marbella is an excellent choice. Between Marbella town and Puerto Banus you have an impressive mix of independent boutiques, luxury brands and international Spanish high street brands, such as Zara and Mango.

The luxury Puerto Banus is crammed with designer boutiques, if you have a few hundred pounds to spend on a tshirt, bikini or pair of shoes, then this is the place to shop. If you’re looking for something a little more unique, then Marbella Old Town is a good shopping destination and La Cañada Shopping Centre on the highway above Marbella, is home to chain stores, boutiques, supermarkets, DIY stores. Here you’ll find the largest Apple store in Spain, Habitat and Marks & Spencer!

History of Marbella:  Although Marbella is a fairly modern town, it still has an interesting history and a significant architectural heritage.

Some experts believe the first settlement in the Marbella area dates back to the Phoenician occupation in the 7th century, although there is no conclusive evidence of this. The Casco Antiguo (Old Town) dates back to the Roman occupation and was originally called Salduba (Salt City).

Festivals: Starting around June, the summer season in Marbella gets going and with it comes a host of festivals and parties. Events include a weekend of pure luxury, at the Marbella Luxury Weekend and the annual Marbella Feria, a week of flamenco, flounce and frivolity.

The summer solstice is celebrated on the beach for La Noche de San Juan, where bonfires are lit all along the beaches of Marbella. These three events take place in June. The world-renowned Starlite Festival comes to Marbella in August, bringing together musicians and artists from around the world in a series of concerts to raise money for charity.

Finally, the eco-holistic Arte Sano festival, which takes place in July and November in San Pedro de Alcantara is a fun, free and sunny weekend of healing arts, eco market, children’s workshops and music.

Museums in Marbella: Marbella might not be a big city, but it has its fair share of cultural attractions. If the day is overcast and you don’t fancy shopping, then we recommend a trip to the Bonsai Museum (Museo de Bonsai), which houses a wonderful collection of Bonsai trees from all around the world, in it’s fantastic garden-museum.

Art lovers have the choice of the Ralli Museum, a contemporary art space, with works from Latin American artists; the Poligono Gallery, a wonderful space created to emulate the art district in Beijing. The Museo del Grabado Español Contemporáneo houses exhibitions of engraving and art works from national artists.

Golf in Marbella: There are 10 golf courses in the Marbella area alone and over 50 in the region of the Costa del Sol. Local courses include: Rio Real, Los Naranjos, La Quinta, Marbella Club and Aloha Golf.

Places to visit in Marbella:  In the famous Plaza de Naranja ’Orange Square’, you can while away hours, sipping sangria, taking in the beautiful surroundings and people, visiting the charming boutiques and art galleries.

The labyrinth of tiny streets and alleys that surround Orange Square will reveal further tiny shops selling all forms of trinkets, fashion and souvenirs and there are some excellent restaurants and bars for a young and trendy crowd.

Cross the road from the Old Town and you find yourself in La Alameda Park, the park is filled with exotic plants and trees and you will feel like you have arrived to a tropical forest in the centre of Marbella. During many weeks of the year there are exhibitions on show in La Alameda.

Down from the park is the Paseo Maritimo (Promenade); this is one of the favourite places for locals and visitors. The boulevard is filled with restaurants of all gastronomies; all look to the beautiful Mediterranean Sea.

There are heaps of activities to keep a family occupied in Marbella, but if you want to venture out of town, pop down the road to Puerto Banus, making sure you stop off to visit some of the cool cafes and restaurants on the Golden Mile (Milla de Oro).

Puerto Banus is notoriously known across the globe for its glitz and glam, chic and showy boutiques, clubs and yachting port. And it’s not far off the mark. If you have the cash to dash for a shopping spree, then here you can shop Gucci, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Jimmy Choo, the designer list is endless.

If you don’t have a spare couple of grand to go shopping, you still need to experience the port. During the day you can enjoy a stroll to the end of the portside, rhapsodize over the luxury yachts and then enjoy a Cosmopolitan cocktail at one of the portside bars, where you can sit on the terrace, watching the world glide by in their Ferrari.

The neighbouring town of San Pedro de Alcantara combines a traditional old-town, with a more modern seafront. There are some superb restaurants and a long, clean stretch of family-friendly beach.

Head up into the mountains behind Marbella to enjoy day visits to some of the inland, whitewashed pueblos of the region. The closest village is Ojen, around 10 minutes drive from the coast, nestled between the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra Alpujata and just five minutes from the stunning Sierra de las Nieves natural park. A charming town, small but perfectly formed.

Slightly further inland you have the villages of Monda and Coin, and Istan is reached heading inland from the Golden Mile. Many foreign residents have settled in these parts, but the villages still retain an air of the past and are worth a visit. You can spend a day out visiting several of the local interior villages, to get a feel of Andalucian life.

Gastronomy & Nightlife in Marbella: Whether you enjoy fine dining or traditional tapas, some of the best restaurants on the Costa del Sol can be found in Marbella, East Marbella, Puerto Banus and San Pedro de Alcantara. Traditional tapas bars, jostle with fish and seafood restaurants, beach bars, Michelin-star establishments and international diners. Whichever way you turn in Marbella, you’ll come across a restaurant. Head to the old fishing port for a plate of fried fish, clams sardines. The Old Town combines budget tapas with some real fine dining establishments.

If you want to eat and then party, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Marbella. Glamourous beach clubs, stylish cocktail bars, rowdy tapas until the early morning. You choose.

Travel Tips in Marbella: Marbella has an exceptionally mild micro climate, protected by the impressive Sierra Blanca mountain range, the winters are mild and the summer months reach 32-35 degrees. You don’t need a car, but if you want to get out of town and visit some of the region’s beaches and villages, then it’s advisable. Click here to check the weather in Marbella.

More information about Tenerife

The island of Tenerife is the largest of the Canary archipelago and is known as the island of eternal spring because of its all year round excellent climate. The island is full of stark contrasts and has a variety of scenery which changes through the regions.

A mountain chain runs through its centre from Anaga to Teno and on both of its slopes there are large, exuberantly fertile valleys, among them especially La Orotava and Gumar.  In the heart of the chain there is a gigantic, natural crater, called Las Cañadas del Teide, which is 29 km across and has officially been declared a National Park.

It lies over 2,000 m above sea level. North of the crater stands El Pico del Teide (Mount Teide), a 3,718 m high mountain, which is the highest point in Spain. It
is snow covered in the winter and marks the island with its unique silhouette.

History of Tenerife

Like the rest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife dates back around to 8-11 million years ago, when its volcanic mountains  developed  in the Atlantic.

It is thought that there were originally three islands, with the mountain ranges of Anaga, Teno and Valle San Lorenzo, but at some point, with massive volcanic activity, the areas merged together and became Tenerife as we know it today.

The original inhabitants of the island, were known as being the most fearless of all the Canary Island inhabitants; it is believed that the first people were  aboriginal and of the northwest African origin, they were named Guanches. They were conquered by the Spanish over 500 years ago, not without putting up a great fight.

Natural Tenerife

Tenerife has an extremely varied plant and wild life; large, wooded mountains, extensive areas where banana, tomato, potato and other agricultural products are grown. Its coast is rocky and lined by cliffs in some places, while in others there are beaches with soft, clean sand, which are sometimes black and sometimes golden.

Tenerife’s Resorts
Tenerife’s all year round agreeable climate brings thousands of tourists every year to the popular seaside resorts of the island.

The resort of Playa de las Americas, popular with the younger tourists, has developed into a vibrant playground of clubs and bars, and is definitely not for the fainthearted! Its neighbour Los Cristianos, however, offers a slightly more laidback destination, although it is still bursting with attractions and amenities for the holidaymaker.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital city of the island is also an upbeat and buzzy holiday destination; whereas the resort of Puerto de la Cruz is definitely a destination for the more discerning holidaymaker; a lot more peaceful and more popular with an older crowd.

The coastal village of Adeje has been described as “heaven on earth”, in an article written for the British newspaper, Daily Telegraph. The area has a rugged be

Playing golf on Tenerife
The all year round warm weather makes Tenerife a popular destination for golf holidays. There are a host of excellent courses across the island, including the Playa Las Americas course, Golf del Sur, Los Palos Golf, Golf Adeje, Amarilla Golf and Golf Club Real.auty, with beautiful clean beaches and ample facilities.

Beaches on Tenerife
Due to its volcanic nature, many of Tenerife’s beaches are not natural, but man-made. Those that are natural have their characteristic black sand.

However, the increasing popularity of the island as a tourist resort, led to the development of Tenerife’s man-made golden sand beaches.

Climate On Tenerife
The Canary Islands enjoy practically all year round good weather. They are nicknamed the Islands of Eternal Spring and temperatures rarely drop below 16ºC and rise to around 30ºC in the summer. The climate is influenced by the island close proximity to North Africa.

Cultural Attractions on Tenerife
The town of La Orotava, which is set within a valley of banana plantations, is a wonderful historical old town, which houses some interesting monuments and has been designated a monument of artistic national interest.

La Laguna is the old capital of Tenerife, and the island’s cultural and religious epicentre; situated in the Aguere Valley in beautiful natural surroundings, La Laguna is full of outstanding architectural buildings and monuments.

Outdoor pursuits on Tenerife
Tenerife is a great destination for those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. The mountainous and volcanic island has many interesting routes, normally heading up a mountain, and you don’t have to be a skilled mountain climber to tackle Tenerife’s mountain ascents.

In the town of Adeje you can take a boat trip to see whales and dolphins or visit the Black Pyramids of Guimar, in the town of Guimar, which is located 26 kilometres from Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In Corralejo there is a professional dive centre where you can enjoy a scuba diving experience to the underwater volcanic rock formations. Here you can take PADI Certificate courses.

Food and Cuisine on Tenerife
Fish plays an important role in the gastronomy of Tenerife, naturally being an island. Especially delicious are Langoustines, Mussels, Octopus, Atlantic Mackerel, and Sardines.

Meat dishes are popular, but most meat tends to be imported in, as there is not much livestock on the island. The exception to this is rabbit, which is reared in Tenerife: a speciality rabbit dish is Conejo al salmorejo (Rabbit in Salmorejo sauce).

If you are visiting the seaside resort of Adeje then you should try the local speciality of Spicy Canarian Chicken.

A special accompaniment to many dishes is called Papas Arugadas, which literally translates to Wrinkly potatoes. The potatoes are boiled in their skins with sea salt, which leaves a fine crust and served with delicious Mojo sauce.

How to Pay your NIE Number Tax

how to pay your form 790 NIE Number Tax

PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE PAYING YOUR NIE NUMBER TAX UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE!!! Please don’t be the person phoning us an hour before your appointment and unable to find a bank to pay.

PLEASE ENSURE THIS IS PAID AT LEAST ONE DAY BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT. This is not always an easy task…..

(if you have a short notice appointment you can pay on the day before your appointment)

For each new NIE Number application, or replacement NIE Number application there will be an applicable tax payable in advance to the Spanish Government.

The amount owed will be shown on your Form 790 we sent you via email.  You need to take this form, which comprises of 3 pages (two identical), to a bank to pay the Tax.  This needs to be done before your NIE Number appointment. DO NOT LEAVE THIS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE AS IT CAN SOMETIMES NOT BE SO EASY…

You may need to try several banks before you will find one which will allow you to pay your NIE Number Tax.  In general all Bank Sabadell will accept your form.

Some banks will only accept payments if you hold an account with them, but most national banks will accept your form and payment without an account.

Recently we have found that due to the long ques that processing many NIE Number tax certificates causes some banks will only accept payment on certain days of the week, for example Tuesdays and Thursday.

NIE Number tax Questions and Answers

Q: How much is the NIE Number Tax?

A: Each region of spain is able to set its own fees for your NIE Number tax. This amount will appear on your form 790 and on average is between 9-13 Euros per person.

Q: I’ve gone to the bank but they have said you have completed the form wrong. They say my NIE Number should be on the form.

A: We complete this form over and over again, day after day.  We can confirm your form has NOT been filled in wrong.

Not all cashiers are trained in what should be on your form. If you have problems try another bank and another cashier.  We can not put your NIE Number on the form as you currently don’t have one.

If you can not find a bank that will accept the form with your passport number put a cross through the number and write in black pen under it:

DO NOT leave paying your tax until the day of your appointment.

Q: I paid my NIE Number Tax, but when I arrived at the police station they said it was the wrong amount and sent me back to the bank to pay more. Why didn’t you tell me?

A: Each region has the ability to set its own Tax Rate. Where possible we try and issue forms with the correct tax rate, however, since the time we issued you the paperwork the police may have changed this amount, which they are not required to notify us or anyone about. The amount may be as little at 10c.  This will not affect your NIE Number application but in certain circumstances may require you to revisit the bank to pay the extra amount owed.

Q: I seem to be going around in circles, the bank will not accept my form 790 tax without a NIE Number and the Police will not give me a NIE Number without paying the form 790 NIE Number Tax. What do I do?

A: Welcome to Spain! This type of situation is not uncommon in Spain. The only answer is to keep trying different banks until one says yes. Crazy? Absolutely! Alternatively cross out the passporrtrt number on your paperwork and write in black pen the following number: Y6453625Z

Q: I have been refused a NIE Number. Have I lost the Tax I paid or can I use it for my new appointment?

A: If your application for a NIE Number was not successful you can still keep the paid form 790 for 1 year from the date you paid the fee and use this at another appointment.

Q: My region only offers joint NIE and residency applications. Why have you still sent me a 790 Tax Form?

A: If you are lucky enough to live in one of the regions which offers a joint NIE Number and residency application system your tax will be slightly higher.  The police station will issue you with a new form 790 to pay on the day if this is the case.

We have said it above but to be sure once again…. Please pay your NIE Number tax as early as possible. Do not leave it until the day of your appointment to pay the Tax. Your appointment will fail if you have not paid the tax in advance.

What is Autonomo  in Spain?

Being Autonomo in Spain is the equivalent of being self-employed or a freelancer in the UK.   Any person carrying out business in Spain is required by law to legalise them self with respect to registration, paying taxes and charging IVA (VAT).

How to Register as autonomo  in Spain once you have your NIE Number.

Registering as autonomo in Spain is  a two step process:

1.)Registering as self-employed with the tax office (Agencia Tributaria)

2.) Joining the autonomo social security system (Regimen Especial de Trabajadores Autonomos RETA).

Both are straightforward and the main requirements to register as Autonomo are:

  • A NIE Number
  • Bank account (for the social security charges)
  • work permit if your coming from outside the EU

You are not required to show a business plans, proof of funds or prove professional qualifications to become autonomo in Spain, although you must show your NIE Number.

Joining the autonomo social security system RETA does require that you are already in the social security system and this involves another fairly simple registration process. Similarly the Agencia Tributaria would expect you to be registered as a resident taxpayer which involves completing a another form (Modelo 30).

That are  bare minimum requirement for registering as self-employed in Spain but there may be other steps to go through, depending on the type of business.

For example anyone opening premises to the public will require an opening licence called a “licensia de apertura”. This is obtained from the local town hall and will be granted according to local by laws, after passing an inspection by a municipal expert (“tecnico”), payment of fees, presentation of other documentation and certificates and undertaking any other remedial work demanded by the town hall (e.g. sound proofing, emergency exits, hygiene facilities).

More information about Lanzarote

Lanzarote, the most eastern of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean is about 130 km off the African coast and 1,100 km from the Iberian Peninsula. Covering 736.9 km2 and it stands as the fourth largest of the Canary Islands.

The first recorded name for the island, given by Angelino Dulcert, was Insula de Lanzarotus Marocelus after the Genoese navigator Lance Lotto Malocello from which the modern name is derived. The island’s name in the native language was Titerro(y) gatra, which can mean “the red mountains”

Lanzarote is 12 km northeast of Fuerteventura and just over 1.2 km from Graciosa. The island is 59 km from north to south and 24 km from west to east.

Lanzarote has 213 km of coastline, of which 10 km is sand, 16.5 km is beach, and the rest is rocky. Its dramatic landscape includes the mountain ranges of Famara (671 m) in the north and Ajaches (608 m) to the south. South of Famara is the El Jable desert, which separates Famara and Montañas del Fuego.

The highest peak in Lanzarote is Peñas del cache rising to 670 metres above sea level. ”Tunnel of Atlantis” is the largest submerged volcanic tunnel in the world.

In 2010, a total of 139,000 people lived on the island of Lanzarote, which is an increase of 9.4% from 2006 (127,000). The island’s government (Cabildo Insular) is based in the capital, Arrecife, which has a population of 59,000.

The majority of residents (73.9%) are Spanish, with a sizable number of residents from other European nations, especially the United Kingdom (4.0%), Germans (2.6%) and Irish (2.5%). Other populous groups include immigrants from Colombia, Morocco, Ecuador, West Africa, China and India, which account for a large part of the remaining 15.6% of the population.

There are 500 different kinds of plants, of which 17 species are endemic. These plants have adapted to the relative scarcity of water, the same as succulents. Plants include Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis), Canary Island Pine (Pinus canariensis), ferns and wild olive trees (Olea europaea). Laurissilva trees that once covered the highest parts of the Risco de Famara and are rarely found today. After the winter rains, the vegetation turns to a colourful bloom between February and March.

How to get a NIE Number in Lanzarote

Lanzarote has 35 types of animal species, including birds and reptiles. Some interesting endemic creatures are Gallotia lizards, and the blind Munidopsis polymorpha crabs found in the Jameos del Agua lagoon, which was formed by a volcanic eruption. It is home to one of two surviving populations of threatened Canarian Egyptian Vultures.

The vineyards of La Geria (a subzone of Lanzarote’s Denominación de Origen wine region), with their traditional farming methods, is a protected area. Some vines are planted in a 4-5 m wide hole that is 2-3 metres deep, with small stone walls surrounding each hole. This agricultural technique is designed to harvest rain and night dew and to protect the plants from the wind.

The vineyards are part of the World Heritage Site along with other places on the island. UNESCO Biosphere Lanzarote was designated as UNESCO Biosphere in 1993, not only because of its unique landscape, but also because of its commitment to preserve and maintain the wonderful natural environment.

Can i use a Fake NIE Number?

Never use a Fake NIE Number

Fake NIE Numbers are a growing problem in Spain. Time and again we are hearing stories of people who have made up a NIE Number to obtain a job or service is Spain not realising the possible consequences.

What is a fake NIE Number?

An official NIE Number issued by the Spanish Police  will start with a letter, followed by seven numbers and another letter in the end, for example D – 758372 – B. Your NIE number is unique to you and is non transferable nor does it expire. A Fake NIE Number is a number sequence made up with has no official use, and has not been issued by the Spanish Government/Police.

We would like to be 100% clear. Using a Fake or illegal NIE Number is not a great idea.  Not only could proving a fake number to your employer possibly cost you your job in Spain but it could also lead to criminal proceedings being taken against you for fraud. Read more about fraud on the Law Society website.

Have you been Refused a NIE NUMBER at your appointment?

refused a NIE Number at Police station
Have you been refused a NIE Number at your NIE Number appointment?

Refused a NIE Number? One of the most frustrating aspects of the Spanish NIE Number system is that although you have your CITA PREVIA appointment booked at the police station, you have your NIE Number paperwork completed and you arrived on time in the right place, The Police may still Refuse you a NIE Number

Why was I refused a NIE Number?

A person running late for NIE Number appointment
Refused a NIE NUMBER because you was running late?

The most common reason for being refused a NIE Number in Spain is not turning up on time.  We recommend all our customers turn up at least 30 minutes before the appointment time, an hour before is even better.  Ensure you know where to park your car before hand.

Fact: 2 in every 10 NIE Number applications are refused on the day

The second main reason for being refused a NIE Number is not having the correct proof to prove why you need a NIE Number. Below we have set out some reasons why you might be applying for a NIE.

I want to buy a car: You will need a letter from the seller or dealership saying you are buying a car. If you can not prove you are buying a car your NIE Number application maybe refused. Buy a Car In Spain information.

I have a job: You will need a letter from your employer saying that you have been offered work. If you can not prove you have a job offer your NIE Number application maybe refused. Get a Job in Spain information.

I’m Buying a house: You will need a letter from your solicitor or estate agents stating this or your NIE Number application maybe refused. Buy a House in Spain information.

I’m going to retire in Spain: Ideally you will be able to provide proof of funds, bank statement, letter from accountant ect. Retire in Spain Information.

Here at MY NIE NUMBER SPAIN ensuring you do not get Refused your number on the day is our main priority.  When we send you your paperwork we will also send you a list of documents you are required to take with you based on your personal circumstances.

Before April 2016 it was possible to arrive at the Police station in your region that dealt with EU Certificates and get a NIE Number the same day. Because of the huge amount of people who were arriving at the police stations each day the stations were becoming over run.

They only gave out a certain number of tickets each day which left some people who had be queuing since the early hours of the morning Disappointed.  In April 2016 the Spanish Police introduced a NIE Number booking System.  The bookings are made via the Police CITA PREVIA booking website.

Get your NIE Number at the Spanish Embassy

Get your Temporary NIE Number from the Spanish embassy

One of the options you have is to obtain your Spanish NIE Number from the Spanish Embassy in your home country before you travel to Spain. The Spanish Embassy Generally does not issue NIE numbers unless its a life and death emergancy. It only acts as a “courier” between the applicant and the competent Police Authorities in Spain.

The plus side of this is, if you manage to get an appointment you may can with your NIE Number in hand. Unfortunately the down side is these NIE Numbers are generally temporary NIE Numbers which only last for a period of 3 months. Then once you get to Spain you have to apply again.  The Spanish Embassy procedure can also sometimes be slow and require several visits.

Please note if your application is for summer seasonal work the Spanish Embassy will not assist you in getting a NIE Number. You must apply when you arrive in Spain. Here at MY NIE we can organise a NIE Number appointment for when you arrive in Spain, Just let us know the date.

We advice against getting your NIE Number from the Spanish Embassy as you will need to apply again when your in Spain.

NIE Number to Inherit Property in Spain.

YOU WILL NEED A NIE

Have you been left an inheritance in Spain, but been told to Claim it you need a Spanish NIE Number? Are you thinking of Making a Spanish Will?

It is recommended that after buying assets (property) in Spain (i.e. House, Villa, apartment) Ex-pats should make a Spanish Will.  A new Spanish law now states all beneficiaries named in a will must obtain their own NIE Numbers in order to inherit.

Reasons for Making a Will in Spain:

1.) Give your self and your relatives Peace of Mind. It is important for your loved ones that you leave everything in order for when the time arrives.

2.) Make sure all the hard work over the years goes directly to those you care about and not to the Spanish Tax Office. Planning in advance ensures you keep Inheritance tax to an absolute minimum for your family.

3.) Locate a local recommended Lawyer who is well informed and up to date on inheritance laws. Seek NIE Numbers for your loved ones at a convenient time for all i.e.: when visiting you on holiday, instead of this being a chore to be carried out later at what will be a stressful enough time for them.

4.) Preparing a will in advance enables you to be informed about the procedures in Spain. Your loved ones can also then be advised of what to expect when the time arrives. E.g., Inheritance Taxes are to be paid up front prior to any names being changed on a title deed. Property and possessions can not be sold or bequeathed until the taxes are paid. Should your inheritors not be prepared or they are to be unsure of the procedures they may not be able to provide to the relevant authorities the correct information and documentation required. This may cause delays and consequently penalties charges may be incurred.

Your assigned lawyer will draw up the will in both English and Spanish. They should ensure you have all the latest Spanish Inheritance Information, translated and witnessed by your local Notary. Following this, registration of the document is made at the Central Wills’ Registry who is based in Madrid.

Usually Lawyers, if you already have a will in your own country of residence, can automatically calculate in advance how much tax your loved ones will have to pay and can also make suggestions of how you may be able to reduce the taxes your inheritors will pay.

In the absence of a will? Should a will not be made, your beneficiaries’ will need judicial or notarised documents that declare they are legitimate heirs. In addition to this they will need to provide clear evidence in order to justify that their claim to inherit your estate is valid. If an agreement by the parties involved cannot be made then it is likely the case will go to court where the decision regarding your hard earned possessions is made by the judge.
